Slip & Slide

Worked on a demolition project today and found myself with a bit of vapor barrier, basically black plastic. Whoop! I say, I can use it to throw weeds on and drag it to the area I compost. I carefully laid it out on a hill to clean. Interested in literally everything I do the chickens ran to see what I had going on! Chickens have pretty slick feet, when they hit that plastic it was like a slip and slide! Visualize! Wish I had a video!

Changing of the Guards

Grateful to have a fresh bail of straw and relatively nice day, I went down to clean the coop. I would have never guessed at the onset of this chicken experience that I would find this relaxing, but for whatever reason I do, plus I am collecting great fertilizer for my garden.

I realized after I got there that I had caught them during a heavy laying period. Not wanting to be too disruptive, I knelt down on some fresh straw to observe the changing of the guards. I call this chicken meditation and it really does calm the soul, it's not fancy, but it works for me.

It seems that the lower left nesting box is getting some action, but for whatever reason they line up for the corner where I had placed a stack of straw. Because they fell in love with the spot, I put up an old cupboard door to keep the hay in. It's ugly, they think it's beautiful, it's all about perspective.

All the girls want is the best spot to lay their egg, acknowledgment for their efforts and hope not to end up at the bottom of the pecking order. Not so unlike us really.

Thrust Back In Time

Seriously we have snow April 6th and only one of the girls left the coop this morning, Sylvia! Normally they are spilling out of the hatch like a muffin top in skinny jeans, but not today? Sylvia followed me half way up the hill, still her sisters, six on the ladder, one in the rafters, and one on a nest refused to come out! Sticking with the principal of chicken logic, I picked her up and returned her to the coop and secured their area. Eight chickens say don't leave the coop! Sorry Sylvia , either your sisters sense danger, or feel after setting their clocks to spring they have been thrust back in time! I know I do!!!

English Muffins and a Chase

Hearing that we would again be pounded with rain I took the opportunity enjoy the great outdoors! Samone the concert doll nearly got pecked to death while delivering bits of an english muffin. I spent the good part of an hour waving the remainder of the muffin shouting CHICK,CHICK, CHICK! While 8 chickens swarmed my feet! I can't emphasise enough how hard it is to move rapidly while this is taking place. Eeny went missing while I was out for most of the day and the dogs were on watch! Finally found her half buried in a hole that she had dug under a tree in a remote area. I am trying to round them up in the afternoon to keep them safe, but Eeny has become somewhat of a renegade chicken! Two days in a row she has thrown her beak in the air and claimed her independence causing me to spend more time I can afford chasing her! I might need a chicken net!

The Chicken Tree

The chicken tree is a big golden cedar, it offers protection from the rain. As it continues to consume the spring break I was looking forward to, I went to the window. The chicken tree had become an umbrella of protection. As I longed for the sun, I stood in the rain and thought, what a lovely moment..... Sometimes it's easy to miss what is, when you focus on what is not.

Rice

I bring rice therefor I am a rock star! I am not sure how it ranks on the grand scale of things, but it was something!
